The Shopify Tool enables you to securely connect your Shopify store with your TailorTalk AI Agent. Once integrated, your agent can assist in managing store data, fetching details, and automating workflows such as lead syncing, product tracking, and customer support.
Setting Up Shopify Integration
To connect your Shopify store, you will need to create a Custom App in your Shopify admin panel and provide the credentials to TailorTalk.
1. Create a Custom App in Shopify
- Log in to your Shopify Admin.
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Click on Develop apps and then Create an app.
- Give your app a name (e.g., "TailorTalk Integration") and click Create app.

- In your new app, go to Access > Scopes and click Select Scopes.
- Select the following scopes (at minimum):
read_productsread_ordersread_customers
- If you want Order Tracking to recognise purchases against orders older than 60 days, also select
read_all_orders. - Click Done.
- Click on Release on the top to release the app.

3. Set the App Distribution to Custom (Needed for Order Tracking)
A custom app is one built for a single store rather than distributed to other merchants. Shopify only lets custom apps read a store's order and customer information, so this needs to be right before you install the app.
If you created your app from your store admin using Develop apps in Step 1, it is already a custom app. Nothing to do here — continue to Step 4.
If your app was created in the Shopify Partner Dashboard, set its distribution before installing it:
- Open your app at partners.shopify.com under Apps.
- Go to the Distribution tab.
- Choose Custom distribution.
- Enter the myshopify domain of the store the app is for (e.g.
your-store.myshopify.com). - Save, then install the app on that store.
Shopify restricts changing the distribution method once it has been set. If the option is greyed out because the app was already released another way, create a new app and choose Custom distribution from the start.
4. Install App and Get Credentials
- Now go to your app dashboard and click on your newly created app.
- Click Install app and confirm.
- A new window will open, choose your shopify store and install the app.

- Now on your app dashboard, go to Settings and copy both Client ID and Client Secret.

- In the TailorTalk dashboard, create the shopify tool.
- Store URL: Enter your store URL (e.g.,
https://your-store.myshopify.com). - Client ID: Enter the Client ID from your Shopify app.
- Client Secret: Enter the Client Secret from your Shopify app.
- Click Create Tool.

6. Turn On Order Tracking (Optional)
Order Tracking marks a lead as converted automatically when they buy from your store, so you can see which conversations turned into sales without checking Shopify.
What you need before turning it on:
- The
read_orders scope on your Shopify app (Step 2) - The app set up as a custom app (Step 3)
Turning it on:
- Open the Shopify tool again after saving it.
- Under Order Tracking, click Connect.
- When it succeeds, the button is replaced by a Connected label. If something is wrong, the reason appears directly beneath it.
How it works: when your agent shares a product or checkout link, TailorTalk quietly tags that link with the lead it was sent to. If the customer buys, Shopify reports the paid order back to TailorTalk and the matching lead is marked converted.
Because the match relies on that tag, a purchase is only linked to a lead when the customer used a link your agent shared. Someone who finds your store separately and checks out will still place a normal order — it just won't be attributed to their conversation.
Common Use Cases
- Customer Support Automation: Enable your agent to provide assistance using your Shopify store data.
- Order and Inventory Updates: Automatically sync new orders or inventory levels.
- Product Information Access: Fetch product details instantly for support or sales conversations.
- Conversion Tracking: See which conversations ended in a purchase, without reconciling orders by hand.
Troubleshooting
- Permissions: Ensure you have enabled the correct "Admin API scopes" in Shopify.
- URL Format: Make sure your URL is in the
{shop-name}.myshopify.com format. - Credential Missmatch: Double-check that you haven't swapped the Client ID and Client Secret.
- "This app is not approved to subscribe to webhook topics containing protected customer data" when connecting Order Tracking: Your app is not set up as a custom app. Follow Step 3 to set its distribution to Custom distribution, or create the app from your store admin, which is custom by default.
- Order lookups fail but product search works: The same cause as above — the scopes are set, but the app is not a custom app. Revisit Step 3.
- Products are not found: Confirm
read_products is among the app's scopes, and that the app was released after the scopes were changed. - Leads are not being marked converted: Check that Order Tracking shows Connected, and remember that only purchases made through a link your agent shared can be attributed.
By connecting Shopify with TailorTalk, your AI agent can provide personalized and real-time assistance, improving your customer engagement and streamlining your e-commerce operations.
