Yes, you can automate Instagram DMs for free, within limits. Instagram and Meta Business Suite give every business account a few fixed replies at no cost, and several automation tools have free plans that send comment-to-DM messages, the "comment LINK and we'll DM you" kind. What the free plans don't give you is volume or replies that understand the question: most cap you at a few hundred DMs or 25 to 100 people a month, add their own branding, and keep AI replies for paid plans.
This guide compares what you get free from Meta and from seven tools, with each free plan's limits as listed on its pricing page on 29 October 2026, and shows when free stops being enough. The examples come from clothing stores, whose DMs ("price?", "size M available?", "link pls") are exactly what people try to automate first.
Disclosure: we make TailorTalk, an AI sales agent for Instagram, WhatsApp and website chat. It has no free plan, only a 7-day free trial, so it isn't on the free list; we say where it fits at the end.
Free Instagram DM automation in one minute
- Free from Meta: an instant reply, an away message, suggested FAQs, keyword replies and a reply to comments that contain a hashtag you choose, all set up in Meta Business Suite. Fixed text only.
- Free comment-to-DM: LinkDM (1,000 DMs a month), CreatorFlow and InstantDM (500 DMs a month each), Zorcha (unlimited DMs, no follow-ups), ManyChat (25 contacts a month) and Inrō (100 contacts a month).
- Free AI: only small allowances, such as Inrō's 50 AI credits, Zorcha's 20 AI FAQs, Tidio's first 50 AI conversations and InstantDM's AI-written comment replies. No free plan here has an AI that answers every DM.
- Meta's rules apply on every plan: one automatic DM per comment within 7 days, and replies only within 24 hours of the person's last message.
- Free plans fit a creator or a shop testing one giveaway. A store getting product questions all day outgrows them in weeks.

What Instagram and Meta give you free
Instagram business accounts connected to Meta Business Suite can use its inbox automations at no cost. According to Meta's Business Help Center, they include:
- Instant reply: a greeting to anyone who messages you for the first time, such as "Thanks for messaging! We reply within a few hours. Sizes and prices are on each post."
- Away message: a reply when you're not available.
- Frequently asked questions: questions people can tap when they open a chat with you, each with a saved answer ("Do you ship abroad?", "How do I find my size?"), plus ready-made replies for your location, contact details and hours.
- Custom keywords: an automatic answer when a message contains one of up to 5 keywords or phrases you choose, such as "price" or "sale". Keywords are case-sensitive and must match exactly, and the reply goes out after 15 minutes unless you answer first. Desktop only.
- Comment to message: a reply to a comment that contains specific hashtags. Desktop only.
These are good for the first hour of a shop's day: they acknowledge every message and answer the questions everyone asks. But comment replies only fire on hashtags, not on a word like "LINK", keyword replies wait 15 minutes, and nothing here can look up a product: everyone gets the same text. Meta also notes that some automations may not be available for every connected channel, and that turning on Meta Business Agent pauses them.
Meta is also building AI into its own tools. Its Meta Business Agent, which answers customers from a business's information and catalogue, launched for WhatsApp and Messenger, and Meta said in June 2026 it is coming to Instagram. It is free to start, with more usage in Meta's paid business plans.
The free plans, one by one
LinkDM: the most free DMs
LinkDM's free plan connects one Instagram account and sends up to 1,000 DMs a month. It covers DMs from post and reel comments, story replies, story mentions and inbox conversation starters. Replying publicly under the comment, removing LinkDM's branding and inbox keyword automation need Pro, at $19 a month for 3 accounts and 25,000 DMs. We found no AI replies on its pricing page.
Best for: a small shop running one comment-to-DM post at a time, such as "comment LINK for the new drop".
CreatorFlow: unlimited automations, 500 DMs
CreatorFlow's free plan is free forever for one account and 500 automated DMs a month, with comment-to-DM, story reply automation, unlimited keyword triggers and templates. When you hit 500, automations pause until the next month. Pro is $15 a month ($12 billed yearly) for 2 accounts and 5,000 DMs. It has no AI replies.
Best for: creators and shops that want several keyword triggers running at once without paying.
InstantDM: free public comment replies
InstantDM's free plan sends 500 DM automations a month from up to 5 posts, with 3 trigger words per automation. It is the only free plan here that also replies publicly under the comment, with AI-written variations so the replies don't all read the same. Story replies, Live comments and DM keyword automation are paid, and free DMs carry InstantDM's branding. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month, billed yearly.
Best for: giveaway and launch posts where a visible reply under each comment matters.
Zorcha: unlimited DMs, basic features
Zorcha's free plan lists unlimited automations, DMs and contacts, plus 20 AI FAQs and 15,000 AI credits. Follow-up messages, collecting phone numbers or emails, message variations and re-running an automation on older comments are paid. Pro is $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly; full AI conversations are on Business, at $109.99 a month.
Best for: accounts whose posts get more comments than the DM caps on other free plans allow.
ManyChat: the best-known, 25 contacts free
ManyChat's free plan covers 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels, up to 4 active automations and 1 user, with ManyChat branding. Instagram comment-to-DM, story replies and keyword triggers work on it. AI replies start on Pro, at $29 a month billed yearly for 2,500 contacts; Essential is $14 a month billed yearly for 250 contacts. Because 25 people is one busy post, the free plan works more as a trial.
Best for: learning how comment-to-DM flows work before choosing a paid tool.
Inrō: free AI credits to try
Inrō's free plan needs no card and covers 100 active contacts a month, 3 active automations, 3 campaigns a month and 50 AI agent credits, with comment triggers included. Pro starts at €12.99 a month and scales with contacts.
Best for: trying an AI agent on Instagram before paying, at low volume.
Tidio: a free inbox, not comment automation
Tidio's free plan includes Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp in one inbox with 50 billable conversations a month, and your first 50 conversations with Lyro, its AI agent, are free once. It has no comment-to-DM, and offline auto-replies start on Growth. Starter is $24.17 a month billed yearly.
Best for: a store that mainly wants website chat and Instagram DMs in one free inbox.
Which free tool for which job
For a clothing store, the job decides the tool. These are the messages that arrive most, and the free option that covers each:
| What happens | Example | Free option |
| People comment to get a link | "LINK" under a new-drop reel | LinkDM, CreatorFlow, Zorcha or InstantDM |
| The same few questions in DMs | "Do you ship to the UK?", "Return policy?" | Meta Business Suite FAQs |
| A keyword in a DM | "price", "COD", "catalogue" | Meta Business Suite keyword replies, CreatorFlow |
| A giveaway with hundreds of comments | "Comment your size to enter" | Zorcha or LinkDM (watch the caps) |
| Product questions | "Is the black blazer in M?" | None: needs an AI that reads your stock |
| A screenshot of a product | A photo from a reel, "this one?" | None free: needs photo matching |
If you sell without a website, our guide to selling clothes on Instagram covers taking orders and payments in DMs, and the fashion DM tools roundup compares paid tools on size, stock and photo questions.
The limits of free Instagram automation
- Caps that run out on a good day. A reel that gets 600 comments uses a 500-DM plan in one post; ManyChat's 25 contacts go in an hour.
- Branding. LinkDM, InstantDM, ManyChat and Tidio add their own branding on the free plan.
- Fixed replies. Without AI, the reply is the same whatever the person asked, so "is it in M?" gets the link, not an answer.
- One account. The free plans that state an account limit allow a single Instagram account.
- Meta's windows. Automated replies can only go out within 24 hours of the person's last message, and a comment gets one automatic DM within 7 days; after that a person has to reply. These rules apply to paid tools too.
Speed matters more than it looks. In a study of 1.25 million sales leads, Harvard Business Review found that firms that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even an hour longer. A free plan that pauses mid-month leaves those messages waiting.
Whatever you use, connect it through Instagram's official login, as every tool on this list does. If a DM automation stops sending, our guide to Instagram's "can't send messages" errors explains the usual causes.
When to move to a paid tool
Pay when one of these is true: you hit the cap before the month ends, you need the reply to answer the question rather than send a link, or a person on your team spends more than an hour a day in DMs. Compare paid tools by what you pay at your real volume, not the entry price; our list of the best Instagram automation tools does that for nine of them.
TailorTalk is the paid option built for the product questions free tools can't answer. Its AI sales agent reads your catalogue, answers size, stock and price questions in Instagram DMs, matches a screenshot to the product, and sends the payment link, then hands the chat to your team when it should. The Starter plan is $49 a month for 400 conversations on Instagram and website chat, after a 7-day free trial. Samyakk, an ethnic wear brand, uses it for more than 1,000 Instagram enquiries a day.
