Most online carts are never paid for. Baymard Institute averages 50 studies and puts the rate at 70.22%. A WhatsApp message is one of the few places you can reach that shopper again where they actually read, and since 28 October 2026 Shopify can send one by itself.
This guide covers what WhatsApp lets you send, the ways to set it up on Shopify and other stores, five message templates you can copy, timing, cost, and the part most setups forget: what happens when the shopper writes back. The examples come from clothing stores, where a cart is often left over a size or delivery doubt, but the rules apply to any store.
Why shoppers leave, and what a message can fix
Baymard's survey found that 42% of US shoppers had abandoned a cart because they were just browsing. Leave those aside and the reasons that remain are mostly questions a message could answer:
| Reason for abandoning (US shoppers, Baymard) | Share | What the message can do |
| Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees) | 40% | State the delivery cost up front, or offer free delivery over a threshold |
| Delivery was too slow | 20% | Give the real delivery date for their postcode |
| Didn't trust the site with card details | 19% | Offer a payment link in the chat, or cash on delivery where you take it |
| Site wanted an account | 18% | Send a link straight back to their cart |
| Returns policy wasn't good enough | 13% | Say how exchanges work if the size is wrong |
Only the first row is about price. That is why a reminder that invites a question ("Not sure about the size? Reply here") often does more than one that leads with a discount, and why the reply matters as much as the reminder.
The rules WhatsApp sets for cart reminders
- It is a marketing message. Meta files abandoned-cart reminders under marketing templates, even when the customer asked for them. A message your business sends first, outside 24 hours since the customer last wrote, must be a template Meta has approved.
- You need permission. Meta requires opt-in before you message someone on WhatsApp. It can be a general consent rather than WhatsApp-only, but it has to name your business. On a store that usually means a consent checkbox next to the phone field at checkout.
- Not to US numbers. Meta has paused delivery of marketing templates to US (+1) numbers, so a cart reminder can't reach a US shopper on WhatsApp. For a US store, email and SMS still do that job.
- Meta limits how many marketing messages one person gets. If a shopper has had several from businesses recently, Meta may not deliver yours, whatever app you use.
- It costs per delivered message, by the shopper's country:
| Shopper's country | Marketing message (cart reminder) |
| United Kingdom | $0.0635 |
| United Arab Emirates | $0.0576 |
| Saudi Arabia | $0.0576 |
| Singapore | $0.0732 |
| India | $0.0118 |
| United States | Not delivered (Meta pause) |
Meta's rates as of October 2026. One reminder that brings back a $60 dress pays for a lot of them, but a second and third reminder to the same cart add up, and they also raise the chance the shopper blocks your number.
How to send WhatsApp cart reminders from Shopify
Option 1: Shopify Messaging (built in)
Shopify added WhatsApp to Shopify Messaging in July 2026 and, on 28 October 2026, ready-made WhatsApp automations for abandoned carts, abandoned checkouts and abandoned browsing. For a store that wants cart reminders and nothing more, it is now the shortest route.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Messaging and, in the WhatsApp section, click Connect WhatsApp. Connect a WhatsApp Business Account through Meta's signup. If that account is already connected to another provider, Shopify asks you to disconnect it first.
- Wait for Meta to review your business and display name.
- Go to Messaging > Automations and start from the abandoned cart or abandoned checkout template. Meta has to approve the WhatsApp template before it sends, so do this days before a sale, not on the morning of it.
- Make sure customers can opt in to WhatsApp marketing, because Shopify's WhatsApp automations go only to subscribed customers and you can't change that.
Limits to know: Shopify's requirements say WhatsApp marketing can't be sent to customers in the United States; new accounts are capped at 2,000 messages a day at first; and you pay per message on your Shopify bill. A customer who replies with a keyword you set gets your canned answer, but Shopify's help pages don't describe anything that answers an open question.
Option 2: a WhatsApp app on Meta's platform
Most WhatsApp tools built for Shopify (and many for WooCommerce) include an abandoned-cart flow, usually next to order confirmations, shipping updates and broadcasts in one plan. You connect your store and a WhatsApp number, pick the template and the delay, and pay the app's plan plus Meta's per-message fee. Choose this when you also want order updates on WhatsApp, more control over timing and segments, or a shared inbox for the replies. Our comparison of WhatsApp automation tools for clothing stores has prices checked on each vendor's site, and our Shopify WhatsApp guide covers the setup step by step.
Option 3: by hand, for a small shop
If you get a few abandoned checkouts a day, Shopify lists them under Orders > Abandoned checkouts with the customer's contact details. A personal message from the WhatsApp Business app to a customer who agreed to hear from you, with a quick reply saved for the wording, is free and often warmer than an automation. It stops scaling at about the point where you start forgetting to send it.
Abandoned cart WhatsApp message templates
Five templates to adapt. Each is a marketing template, so keep it to one clear purpose and one button. {{1}} is the customer's first name and {{2}} the product.
1. The plain reminder
"Hi {{1}}, you left the {{2}} in your cart. It's still there if you want it. [Button: View my cart]"
2. The size question
"Hi {{1}}, still thinking about the {{2}}? If you're between sizes, reply with your usual size and height and we'll tell you which one fits. [Button: View my cart]"
3. Delivery and exchanges
"Hi {{1}}, the {{2}} is still in your cart. Order today and it reaches you by {{3}}, and if the size isn't right, exchanges are free within 14 days. [Button: Complete my order]"
4. Low stock
"Hi {{1}}, only a few of the {{2}} are left in your size. We've kept your cart as it was. [Button: View my cart]" Send this only when it is true: an agent or app that reads live stock can check first.
5. The last nudge, with an offer
"Hi {{1}}, here is 10% off the {{2}} if you'd like it, with code {{3}}, valid until Sunday. [Button: Use my code]" Keep offers for the second reminder at most, or shoppers learn to wait for them.
More wording, including the exact template layout Meta approves, is in our abandoned cart recovery template.
Timing: when to send, and how often
- First reminder: a few hours after the cart is left, while the shopper still remembers it. Within minutes feels like being watched; the next day is often too late for an impulse buy.
- Second reminder, if any: about a day later, and only if the first got no reply and no order.
- Stop there. Two marketing messages about one cart are plenty, and every unanswered one costs money and risks a block.
- Sale weeks: around Black Friday everyone's cart reminders compete in the same inbox, so get templates approved early and lead with delivery dates rather than more discounts. Our Black Friday guide for clothing brands has the full plan.
What happens when the shopper replies
A good reminder gets replies: "Do you have it in L?", "Is the colour like the photo?", "Can I pay cash on delivery?". That is the moment the sale is won or lost. Research in Harvard Business Review found that firms that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even an hour longer. A keyword reply can't answer these, and a reply the next morning reaches a shopper who has already bought elsewhere.
This is what TailorTalk does. Its AI sales agent answers WhatsApp, Instagram DMs and website chat from your live Shopify catalog, so it can say which sizes are in stock right now, answer fit, delivery and exchange questions from your policies, match a screenshot to the closest piece you sell, send a payment link in the chat, and hand the conversation to a person when it should. On WhatsApp it also sends Shopify-triggered messages, abandoned-cart recovery included, to customers who have already messaged the agent, so there is no contact list to upload.
Samyakk, an ethnic-wear retailer, handles 1,000+ inquiries a day with the same agent on Instagram. WhatsApp starts on the Growth plan at $112 a month ($89 billed yearly) for 1,600 conversations, with Meta's fees paid to Meta, and every plan has a 7-day free trial.
Common mistakes
- Messaging shoppers who never opted in. It breaks Meta's rules, and blocks lower your number's quality rating.
- Leading every reminder with a discount. It trains customers to abandon carts on purpose.
- Forgetting the US. A US-heavy store that relies on WhatsApp reminders reaches almost none of its shoppers; use email and SMS there.
- Approving templates on launch day. Meta's review can take a day, longer in a busy week.
- Sending a reminder nobody can answer. If the reply goes to an inbox no one watches, the reminder did half its job.
FAQs
Is an abandoned cart reminder a marketing or a utility message on WhatsApp?
Marketing. Meta classes abandoned-cart reminders and offers as marketing templates, even when the customer asked for them, so they need opt-in and cost the marketing rate for the shopper's country.
Can Shopify send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp?
Yes. Since 28 October 2026 Shopify Messaging has ready-made WhatsApp automations for abandoned carts, checkouts and browsing, set up under Messaging > Automations. They go only to customers who opted in to WhatsApp marketing, and not to customers in the United States.
Can I send WhatsApp abandoned cart messages to US customers?
No. Meta has paused delivery of marketing templates to US (+1) phone numbers, and cart reminders are marketing templates. Use email or SMS for US shoppers.
How much does a WhatsApp abandoned cart message cost?
Meta charges per delivered marketing message by the shopper's country: as of October 2026 about $0.0635 in the UK, $0.0576 in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, $0.0732 in Singapore and $0.0118 in India. Apps add their plan fee; Shopify Messaging adds the charge to your Shopify bill.
When should I send an abandoned cart message on WhatsApp?
A few hours after the cart is left for the first reminder, and at most one more about a day later if there was no reply or order. Keep any discount for the second message.
Do I need a WhatsApp Business API account for cart reminders?
For automatic reminders, yes: Shopify Messaging and WhatsApp apps both connect a WhatsApp Business Account through Meta's signup. A small shop can also send reminders by hand from the WhatsApp Business app to customers who agreed to hear from it.
