"WhatsApp MCP" means connecting an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to WhatsApp, so it can read your chats and act on them when you ask. For a business that sells on WhatsApp, that turns an evening of scrolling through conversations into one question: "Which customers asked about the linen co-ord set in size M this week, and who is still waiting for an answer?"
There are three very different ways to do it, and one of them can get your number banned. This guide explains what a WhatsApp MCP server is, how the three kinds compare, which WhatsApp rules still apply when an AI does the work, and how to connect Claude or ChatGPT to WhatsApp Business in a few minutes. The examples come from a clothing brand, but the steps are the same for any shop.
Quick answer: for a business number, use an MCP server that works through Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform, never one that links your phone through WhatsApp Web. Connect it to Claude as a custom connector, or to ChatGPT in developer mode, sign in, and ask in plain words. TailorTalk's server works this way: add https://api.tailortalk.ai/mcp to your AI app and sign in with your TailorTalk account.
What is a WhatsApp MCP server?
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to other apps. Anthropic introduced it in November 2024 as "a universal, open standard for connecting AI systems with data sources", and in December 2025 it moved to the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation, with Anthropic, Block and OpenAI as founding contributors. Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and many other AI apps can now use MCP servers.
An MCP server is the adapter between the AI app and the other service. It tells the assistant which actions exist, such as "list conversations", "read a conversation" or "send a message", and carries them out when the assistant calls them. A WhatsApp MCP server is simply one whose actions reach WhatsApp chats.
Software is moving this way fast. Gartner predicts that 40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025. For a small brand, MCP is the cheapest way to get some of that today: the AI app you already pay for becomes an assistant that knows your customer chats.
The three kinds of WhatsApp MCP server
Search for "WhatsApp MCP" and you will find dozens of projects. They fall into three groups, and the difference matters more than any feature list.
| WhatsApp Web bridge | Developer server on the Cloud API | Platform MCP server | |
| How it reaches WhatsApp | Links your phone like WhatsApp Web, by QR code | Meta's official WhatsApp Cloud API | Meta's official API, through the platform you already use |
| Which account | A personal or WhatsApp Business app number | A WhatsApp Business Platform number | Your business number on the platform |
| Allowed by WhatsApp | No: unofficial clients break WhatsApp's terms | Yes | Yes |
| Setup | Run code on your computer | Meta app, access token, hosting | Paste a URL and sign in |
| Customer history and context | Your phone's chats only | Only what you store yourself | Leads, tags, notes, broadcasts and the AI agent's chats |
| Best for | Personal experiments | Developers building their own system | Shop owners and sales teams |
1. WhatsApp Web bridges
The most popular open-source project, lharries/whatsapp-mcp, has more than 6,000 stars on GitHub. In its own words it "connects to your personal WhatsApp account directly via the Whatsapp web multidevice API", and you scan a QR code to link it. It is clever, and fine for reading your own messages on a spare number, but it is not an official WhatsApp client.
WhatsApp is clear about this. Its help page on unofficial apps says "linking your WhatsApp account to unofficial versions of WhatsApp violates our Terms of Service", and that your account "might also be temporarily or permanently banned". For the number your customers order on, that risk is not worth taking.
2. Developer servers on the WhatsApp Cloud API
Other servers wrap Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform. They are safe, but they are building blocks: you create a Meta app, register a phone number, keep an access token secret and host the server yourself. They can send a message, but they usually keep no history of who each customer is, what they bought or what your team promised them, so the assistant starts every chat knowing nothing.
3. Platform MCP servers
The third kind comes from the WhatsApp platform your business already runs on. The platform holds your customer conversations, labels and campaigns, and its MCP server lets an AI app use them under your own login. TailorTalk's server is listed in the official MCP Registry and works with Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and any app that supports remote MCP servers with sign-in. Because TailorTalk connects to WhatsApp through Meta's official platform, nothing about it puts your number at risk.
WhatsApp rules that still apply when an AI does the work
Connecting an AI assistant does not change WhatsApp's rules. Four are worth knowing before you start.
- The 24-hour window. Meta's documentation says ordinary messages "can only be sent in an open 24-hour customer service window, which opens and resets with each user message". So the assistant can reply to a customer who wrote today, but reaching someone after a day of silence needs an approved template message, which you send from your WhatsApp platform rather than from the chat with Claude.
- Message fees. Meta charges per delivered message. Since 1 October 2026, replies inside the 24-hour window are free only for the first 1,000 a month on each business number. Our guide to WhatsApp automation tools has the current rates by country.
- Meta's AI rule. Since 15 January 2026, Meta's terms bar general-purpose AI assistants from using the WhatsApp Business Platform as their product. Meta told TechCrunch the change does not affect businesses that use AI to serve their own customers. An assistant you use to run your own shop's chats falls on the allowed side.
- Opt-in still counts. An AI assistant should only message people who wrote to you or agreed to hear from you, exactly as your team would.
How to connect Claude to WhatsApp Business
These steps use TailorTalk. You need a TailorTalk account with your WhatsApp Business number connected; WhatsApp is included from the Growth plan at $112 a month, or $89 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial.
- In Claude (claude.ai or the desktop app), open Customize, then Connectors.
- Click +, then Add custom connector. Name it TailorTalk and paste https://api.tailortalk.ai/mcp as the server URL. Leave the advanced settings empty.
- Claude opens TailorTalk in your browser. Sign in with the account that owns your WhatsApp agent, check the email shown, and click Allow.
- In a new chat, click + at the bottom left, open Connectors and make sure TailorTalk is switched on. Then ask your first question.
Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, including Free, which allows one custom connector. On a Team or Enterprise plan an owner adds the connector once and each member connects to it. A connector added on claude.ai also works in the Claude desktop app and in Claude Code under the same Claude account. The full steps are in our MCP setup guide.
Connecting ChatGPT to WhatsApp Business
ChatGPT uses MCP servers as custom apps in developer mode, on the web. OpenAI's help page says full MCP support, including actions that change things such as sending a message, is available on the Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, where an admin turns on developer mode. On Pro, custom apps can read and fetch but not make changes. Create the app with the same URL, choose OAuth, sign in to TailorTalk and click Allow.
Connecting Claude Code
In a terminal, run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user tailortalk https://api.tailortalk.ai/mcp, start claude, type /mcp, choose tailortalk and select Authenticate.
What to ask: examples for a clothing brand
Ask in your own words, and name the agent if you have more than one. These are the questions fashion brands get the most out of.
Find out what customers want
- "Read this week's WhatsApp conversations and tell me which products people asked about most, and in which sizes."
- "Which customers asked whether the black wrap dress runs small? Summarise what we told them."
- "Show the hot leads from the last three days and what each of them is waiting for."
Follow up and keep the pipeline clean
- "Mark everyone who asked for the bridal lehenga price this week as hot and tag them bridal."
- "Reply to Priya that her exchange for the size M kurta will be picked up tomorrow." The assistant shows you the message and asks you to confirm before it sends it, as your team.
- "How many messages failed in Friday's festive sale broadcast, and why?"
Improve the AI agent that answers customers
- "Show my WhatsApp agent's prompt and suggest how it should handle questions about returns."
- "Test my agent as a customer asking whether the cotton saree is see-through, and tell me where its answer goes wrong."
- "Turn on follow-ups for my WhatsApp agent, 12 hours after the last message."

What the assistant can and cannot do
With TailorTalk's server, the assistant can read what you see on your TailorTalk dashboard: your agents and their setup, leads and full conversations, contacts, campaigns, broadcasts with the delivery status of each message, WhatsApp templates and webhook deliveries. It can also make changes when you ask:
- Message a lead with a text reply on the channel they wrote in, shown in the chat as your team's message.
- Update leads: status, notes, tags or owner, or mark an escalation as handled.
- Change an agent's settings, such as follow-ups, lead statuses, tags and quick responses.
- Edit the agent's draft prompt, test it in a private test chat, and deploy it when you are happy.
Before each change the assistant says what it is about to do, and your AI app asks you to confirm. A message reaches the customer at once and cannot be taken back. The assistant cannot delete anything, and it cannot send files or WhatsApp templates. It works as you: it reaches only the organizations your login can see, and loses access as soon as you are removed from one.
Claude or ChatGPT vs an AI sales agent on WhatsApp
An MCP connection gives you, the owner, an assistant. It acts only when you ask it something in a chat. It does not sit on your WhatsApp number answering customers at 2 a.m.
That job belongs to an AI sales agent: it replies to every customer in seconds, checks stock and sizes, recommends products and sends payment links, on WhatsApp, Instagram and your website. The two work best together. The agent talks to customers, and Claude or ChatGPT helps you see what those customers want, follow up on the ones who matter and improve how the agent answers. Saree retailer Mysore Saree Udyog uses TailorTalk's agent to handle more than 8,500 leads a month across WhatsApp and Instagram.

A short safety checklist
- Use an official connection. If a WhatsApp MCP server asks you to scan a QR code with your business phone, it is a WhatsApp Web bridge.
- Sign in, don't paste secrets. A good server sends you to its own sign-in page. Never give an AI app your WhatsApp access token or a password.
- Read every confirmation. Check the recipient and the text before you allow a message.
- Know where the data goes. What the assistant reads is shared with the AI app you connected, under that app's privacy terms.
- Disconnect what you no longer use. In Claude, remove the connector under Customize, then Connectors.
Frequently asked questions
What is WhatsApp MCP?
WhatsApp MCP is a way to connect an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to WhatsApp through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for linking AI apps to other services. An MCP server exposes actions like reading conversations or sending a message, and the assistant uses them when you ask.
Can I connect Claude to my personal WhatsApp?
Open-source bridges can link a personal number through WhatsApp Web, but WhatsApp says linking your account to unofficial versions of WhatsApp violates its Terms of Service and can get the account temporarily or permanently banned. For a business number, use a server built on Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform.
Can ChatGPT send WhatsApp messages for my business?
Yes, through an MCP server in ChatGPT's developer mode. OpenAI's help page says full MCP support, including actions that send or change things, is on the Business, Enterprise and Edu plans; Pro can read but not make changes. WhatsApp's 24-hour rule still applies, so free-form replies only reach customers who wrote in the last 24 hours.
Does the AI assistant reply to my customers automatically?
No. An assistant connected through MCP acts only when you ask it something in a chat, and asks you to confirm each change. To answer customers automatically around the clock, you need an AI agent on your WhatsApp number, such as TailorTalk's AI sales agent; the assistant then helps you review and improve it.
How much does it cost to connect Claude to WhatsApp Business?
Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector. With TailorTalk, WhatsApp comes with the Growth plan at $112 a month, or $89 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial. Meta bills its WhatsApp message fees to your business directly.
Is it safe to give an AI assistant access to customer chats?
With an official server, yes, with care. TailorTalk's server never sees your password, works only with what your own login can reach, and asks before every change. What the assistant reads is shared with the AI app you connected under its privacy terms, so treat it like anything else you share in a chat.
