Connecting Shopify to Instagram can mean three different things. You can put your Shopify products in an Instagram shop and tag them in posts. You can send people from Instagram to your store. Or you can answer the DMs your posts bring in, from your live Shopify catalog. Each one is set up differently, and only the first needs Facebook.
This guide walks through all three, step by step, with what Meta and Shopify require and what to do when the connection fails. The examples come from clothing brands, where most Instagram questions are "do you have this in my size?", but every step works for any Shopify store.
Connecting the store is one step. For the rest, from the bio to Reels and turning DMs into orders, see our guide to selling clothes on Instagram.
Can you connect Shopify to Instagram?
Yes. Shopify and Meta connect through Meta's free Facebook & Instagram app, which Shopify calls a sales channel. It syncs your products to a shop on Instagram and Facebook so you can tag them in posts and reels. Since August 26, 2025, buyers no longer pay inside Instagram: they tap through and finish checkout on your Shopify store.
| Way to connect | What it does | Needs Facebook? | Cost |
| 1. Instagram shop (Meta's app) | Your Shopify products on your Instagram profile, tagged in posts and reels; checkout on your store. US full, many countries in beta | Yes: a Facebook Page and a business portfolio | Free |
| 2. Links to your store | Store link in your bio, link stickers in stories, product links in DMs | No | Free |
| 3. DMs answered from Shopify | Replies to "price?", "my size?" and photos with live stock and a checkout link | No: Instagram login is enough | A chat tool's plan |
1. Connect Shopify to an Instagram shop
What you need first
These are Shopify's requirements for the Facebook & Instagram channel:
- An Instagram professional account (business or creator), associated with your business's Facebook Page.
- A published Facebook Page, connected to a business portfolio, with your personal Facebook account in full control of both.
- A Shopify online store that is not in private mode, with products people can buy directly on your verified domain.
- A business in one of Meta's supported countries, and products that follow Meta's Commerce Policy.
On Meta's list, only the US has the full experience. Canada, the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, the Nordic countries, Australia, Singapore, India, Japan and a few others are in an open beta, where some sellers may not get every feature. The UAE and Saudi Arabia aren't on it, so brands there sell through links and DMs instead (ways 2 and 3).
Steps
Shopify's setup, from your Shopify admin:
- Go to Settings > Sales channels and open the Shopify App Store.
- Search for Facebook, open Facebook & Instagram by Meta and click Add channel (or Add app).
- Click Start set up on the feature you want first, then Connect account, and sign in to Facebook.
- Connect the Facebook Page, business portfolio and Instagram account it asks for, accept the terms and click Finish setup.
The channel then appears under Sales channels in your Shopify admin (not under Apps). Eligible products sync from your Shopify inventory.
Tag your Shopify products on Instagram
Once your Instagram shop is approved, you can tag products from your Shopify catalog in feed posts and reels: up to 20 products on a post (5 per carousel slide) and 30 on a reel. Stories and Live can't carry product tags, and tagging needs a business account with an approved shop. Since August 2023 Meta has also removed tagging for some businesses whose shops don't have checkout on Instagram, so check that Tag products appears when you post.
A tag takes the shopper to the product page, and from there to your Shopify checkout. What it can't do is answer "does this come in a 12?" or "how long to Dubai?". Those questions arrive in your DMs, which is the third connection below.
Can you connect Shopify to Instagram without Facebook?
For an Instagram shop and product tags, no: Shopify's channel needs a Facebook Page and a business portfolio, even if you only sell on Instagram. For everything else, yes:
- Links to your store work from any Instagram account.
- DM tools can connect through Instagram's own login. Meta's Instagram Platform serves professional accounts "without requiring a linked Facebook Page", and messaging works with it. TailorTalk connects this way.
Why can't I connect Shopify to Instagram? (shop disabled or not working)
Most failures come from one of these. Check them in order:
- Instagram is a personal account. Switch to a professional account (business or creator) in the app's settings.
- Instagram isn't associated with the Facebook Page you picked during setup, or you connected a different Page or business portfolio from the one linked to Instagram.
- Your personal Facebook account doesn't have full control of the Page and the business portfolio, for example when an agency owns them.
- The store is in private mode (password protected), or products can't be bought on your own verified domain.
- Your business isn't in a supported country.
- Products break Meta's Commerce Policy, or the account is too new: Shopify notes the account must show "an authentic, established presence", which "might also include maintaining a sufficient follower base".
Shopify's setup page lists the error messages the channel shows and what each one means, so start from the message you see.
2. Send people from Instagram to your Shopify store
Without a shop, you can still link Instagram to Shopify for free: your store or a collection in your bio, a link sticker on stories, and a product link in DMs. It is also the route for brands outside Meta's supported countries. If you sell from DMs and have no store at all yet, see how to sell clothes on Instagram without a website.

The other direction, showing your Instagram feed on your Shopify store, is a theme or app job: search the Shopify App Store for "Instagram feed". These show your posts; they don't sync products or messages.
3. Answer Instagram DMs from your Shopify catalog
Tags and links send people to a product page. But on Instagram, people ask before they buy: they comment "price?", reply to a story, or send a screenshot of a reel and ask "do you have this?". Meta lets a business reply only after someone writes first, so every DM comes from someone who chose to write. In a study of online leads published in Harvard Business Review, firms that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even an hour longer.
An AI agent connected to Shopify answers those DMs from live stock. Here is the setup in TailorTalk, whose Shopify integration and Instagram integration pages cover each side in more detail:
- Connect Shopify: create a custom app in your Shopify admin (Settings > Apps > Develop apps) with read access to products, orders and customers, then paste its Client ID and Client Secret into TailorTalk's Shopify tool.
- Connect Instagram: click Connect on the Instagram channel and log in with your Instagram professional account. No Facebook Page is needed.
- If messages don't come through, open Instagram's Settings > Messages and story replies > Message requests > Connected tools and turn on Allow access to messages.
- Turn on image search with the Shopify tab, so product photos sync from your store and the agent can match a photo a shopper sends. If your product data is thin, the AI catalog builds entries from photos.
- Choose the entry points: DMs for comments (with an optional public reply), story replies, and ads that open a DM.
What the agent does in the chat
- Matches a screenshot or photo to the closest products in your Shopify catalog and says which sizes are in stock.
- Answers size, fabric, delivery and return questions from your store data and policies.
- Sends the product or checkout link in the chat, and marks the conversation converted when that link leads to a paid order.
- Hands the chat to a person when it needs one, and, if you turn it on, stops replying once someone on your team answers from the Instagram app.
Instagram's rules that shape the setup
| Rule | What it means for a Shopify store |
| Reply window: 24 hours after the shopper's last message | Answer fast. After an ad that opens a DM, the window "may last up to 7 days" |
| One private reply per comment, within 7 days | A comment like "price?" gets one DM; the chat continues if they answer |
| Businesses can't start a DM | No order updates or cart reminders on Instagram (see below) |
| Human agent tag: 7 days | Tools approved for it let a person on your team answer a tricky question up to 7 days later |

What Instagram can't do: order updates
Instagram can't send Shopify order confirmations, shipping updates or abandoned-cart reminders. A business can only message someone who wrote to it first, and a Shopify order carries an email and a phone number, not an Instagram account. WhatsApp can: an approved template goes to the phone number on the order.
So the useful move in an Instagram DM is to offer order updates on WhatsApp. Shoppers want to know where their parcel is, and once they have messaged you there, confirmations and tracking can reach them. How to set that up: connect Shopify to WhatsApp.
What it costs
- Meta's Facebook & Instagram channel: free on every Shopify plan, subject to eligibility.
- Links in your bio, stories and DMs: free.
- Answering DMs with TailorTalk: Starter is $49 a month ($39 billed yearly) for 400 conversations on Instagram and website chat; WhatsApp starts on Growth at $112 ($89 yearly). Every plan has a 7-day free trial.

Common mistakes
- Picking a different Facebook Page or business portfolio during setup from the one linked to Instagram.
- Expecting shoppers to pay inside Instagram. Checkout happens on your Shopify store.
- Tagging products that are out of stock in Shopify, or letting photos drift from what you sell. An agent that reads your catalog repeats whatever it says.
- Leaving DMs unanswered for a day. After 24 hours you can no longer reply normally.
- Expecting order notifications on Instagram. Send them on WhatsApp.

FAQs
How do I connect Shopify to Instagram?
Add Meta's free Facebook & Instagram channel from your Shopify admin (Settings > Sales channels > Shopify App Store), sign in to Facebook, connect your Facebook Page, business portfolio and Instagram professional account, and finish setup. Your eligible products sync to an Instagram shop, and you can then tag them in posts and reels.
Can I connect Shopify to Instagram without Facebook?
Not for an Instagram shop: Shopify's channel needs a Facebook Page and a business portfolio. Links to your store need nothing, and DM tools such as TailorTalk connect through Instagram's own login, with no Facebook Page.
Can customers check out on Instagram?
No. Since August 26, 2025, shoppers add products in the Instagram app and finish checkout on your Shopify store.
Why is my Shopify Instagram shop not working or disabled?
Usually the Instagram account is personal, it is linked to a different Facebook Page from the one you connected, the store is password protected, the business is outside Meta's supported countries, or products break Meta's Commerce Policy. The error message in the channel names the cause.
Can Instagram send Shopify order confirmations?
No. A business can only message someone on Instagram who wrote first, and an order has no Instagram account on it. Use WhatsApp templates for order and shipping updates.
Can an AI agent answer Instagram DMs from my Shopify catalog?
Yes. Connect Shopify and Instagram to a tool like TailorTalk and it answers from live stock, matches photos shoppers send to your products, and sends a checkout link in the chat.
